The Prayag means the confluence of two or more rivers. In Garhwal region there are five sacred confluences, name of Panchaprayag.
 
Deoprayag :

Situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers, Deoprayag is the first of the five prayags on the pilgrimage route to Badrinath shrine. The two rivers combine to form the Ganga River. A dip in the water at the confluence is considered to be purifying.
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 
Rudraprayag :

Named after Lord Shiva (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the confluence of the rivers Alaknanda and Mandakini. According to Hindu Mythology , Lord Shiva appeared in his Rudra Avtaar (incarnation) when master of mysteries of music Narad Muni worshipped the lord.

3 kms. from Rudraprayag., Koteshwar temple (lord Shiva temple) in the form of a cave is situated on the bank of river Alaknanda. It is believed that before going to Kedarnath, Lord Shiva meditated here.
 
 
Karan Prayag :

Karan prayag is situate 31 kms from Rudraprayag, Ice flow from Pindari glacier become Pindar river, and when it meets the Alaknanda at 788 mts., confluence is known as Karan Prayag.

 
The thick wooded of the hill surrounding Karan Prayag were meeting ground for Shakuntala and Raja Dushyant. The place known its name from Karan, son of the Kuntee and Lord Surya ( Sun). Besides the temple dedicated to Goddess Umadevi at Dimmer village, Narayan & Gopal stand at the confluence.
 
 
Nand Prayag :

Nand Prayag is situated 20 kms. from karan Prayag at 914 mts. forms the confluence of Alaknanda and Nandakini (flowing from glacier near Nandadevi peak) river. It is said that confluence is named for the Pious Raja Nand.
 
 
Vishnu Prayag :

Vishnu Prayag is situated 13 kms. from Joshimath at 1371 mts. forms the confluence of Vishnu Ganga and Dhauli Ganga and after that it is known the name of Alaknanada. It is said that sage Narad worshipped Vishnu at this sanctified spot.
