Yamunotri is the source of the River Yamuna, an old temple dedicated to goddess Yamuna, situated at an elevation of about 3,235 mts. Yamunotri finds a special mention in the hindu mythology.

According the legend, this secluded hilly spot was the home of an ancient sage, Asit Muni. Yamuna is the twin sister of YAma, the lord of death. It is believed that any one who bathes in her water will be spared tortuous deat. Yamuna is also daughter of Surya.
What to see :
» Temple

The main temple dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The present temple was built by Maharani Guleria of Jaipur in the late 19th century. Once destroyed by an earthquake, it has been rebuilt. A holy dip in the near by tank filled by hot water spring and cooking rice in its water are common rituals performed by the devotee. The temple remain closed November to May.
» Surya Kund

There are number of thermal spring in the vicinity of the temple which flow into numerous pools. The temperature of water is very high 190 degree F.
» Diya Shila

A rock pillar, worshipped before entering the Yanunotri temple. Origin of the Shila not known. But this hold a place of reverence in the rituals in and around Yamunotri, since time immemorial.
